We focus on works made by real people
Music, for us, is something a human felt, wrote, played and stood behind. That is what our fans pay for, and that is who our platform exists to pay: real artists, making a real living from their work. When you press play on fjalla, you should never have to wonder whether there is a person on the other end of that stream.
Why we draw this line
Every generative AI model is, at its core, trained on the works of other artists - overwhelmingly without their knowledge, their consent or a cent of compensation. The music it outputs only exists because thousands of humans spent their lives creating the works it learned from.
In our view, monetizing that output is a form of unfair exploitation of the very people who made it possible. It takes value out of the market that belongs to creators, and puts nothing back.
And that leads to a simple contradiction we are not willing to live with: we cannot stand for fairness and at the same time accept AI-generated music as an art form on our platform. One cancels out the other. So we choose the artists.
What this means in practice
Works released on fjalla are made by humans. That is the standard we hold ourselves to, and the standard we ask of everyone who uploads. We kindly ask all artists and fans to respect this position - and in return, we commit to standing behind it, honestly and consistently, the same way we stand behind our payout promise.
We know where technology is heading, and we are not afraid of it. But "Power to the artist" means the human artist. It always will.
