One million Spotify streams pay roughly $3,000 to $5,000 to the rights holders. That range comes from the common estimate of $0.003 to $0.005 per stream (TuneCore). The artist usually keeps less, because a label, distributor or both take a share first. If your listeners mostly live in the US, the number sits near the top of the range.
The quick table
These figures use $0.003 to $0.005 per stream, before any splits.
| Streams | Gross payout |
|---|---|
| 1,000 | $3 to $5 |
| 10,000 | $30 to $50 |
| 100,000 | $300 to $500 |
| 1,000,000 | $3,000 to $5,000 |
| 10,000,000 | $30,000 to $50,000 |
One distributor reports a US rate of about $4.43 per 1,000 streams in January 2026, based on its own royalty data (Dynamoi). At that rate, a million US streams pay about $4,430.
Why there is no fixed rate
Spotify does not pay a set price per play. It collects subscription and ad money in each country, keeps its share, and pays the rest out by market share. Your rate is your share of all streams in that pool.
So the same million streams pay very differently depending on who listens. Premium listeners in Norway or the US are worth several times more than free listeners in India or Nigeria. We list the country rates in Spotify Pay Per Stream by Country.
What the artist actually keeps
The gross payout goes to whoever owns the recording. Then the splits start:
- Independent with a flat-fee distributor: close to 100 percent of the gross.
- Independent with a percentage distributor: typically 80 to 90 percent.
- Signed to a label: often 15 to 25 percent, after the label recoups its advance.
A signed artist with a million streams can see a few hundred dollars. Songwriters earn separate publishing royalties on top, but those are smaller.
The threshold at the bottom
Since 2024 a track needs 1,000 streams in 12 months before it earns anything at all. Most tracks on the way to a million pass it quickly, but small releases often never do. Details in Spotify 1,000 Stream Minimum Explained.
How many streams to earn a living
Take $2,000 a month as a modest income. At $0.004 per stream, an independent artist needs about 500,000 streams every month. A signed artist on a 20 percent royalty needs about 2.5 million. Our article How Many Streams to Make Minimum Wage runs the numbers for different countries.
How pay-per-play compares
On fjalla, the fan pays 2.1 cents per play and the artist earns 1.2 cents of it. The difference covers app store, payment and platform fees. That is about three times the average Spotify rate per stream. It also means €1,000 a month takes about 83,000 streams, not hundreds of thousands. There is no pool, so the rate does not change with the listener's country.
Fewer people use pay-per-play apps than Spotify, so the two models work best side by side. Spotify brings reach. A pay-per-play service turns your loyal fans into real income. Try the royalty calculator with your own numbers.
